    On my recent fishing trips this weekend in San Lui On my recent fishing trips this weekend in San Luis Pass, Tx, I had the opportunity to try some fresh caught stone crabs, which were so delicious! 

Here are some interesting facts on stone crabs:

🦀The meat from stone crab is flaky – a cross between a shrimp and a lobster. 

🦀They're usually served chilled, which allows the meat to slip free of the shell easily, and also gives it a finer, clearer flavor. 

🦀With most seafood, the nutritional benefits are great, and stone crab is no exception. They are a lean, protein-rich food, and a good source of minerals like magnesium and selenium. 

🦀Nutritional Value Per Serving: For approximately 3 ounces (85 grams) of cooked edible portions (equivalent to 4 medium claws): Calories 60
Calories From Fat 0
Total Fat 0g
Saturated Fat 0g
Trans Fatty Acid 0g
Cholesterol 45mg
Total Carbohydrates 0g
Protein 15g

🦀Also, aquatic toxins and methylmercury are not a factor with crabs and other shellfish, so they are safe to eat.

    My great nephew, Porter is five years old and beli My great nephew, Porter is five years old and believe it or not, this little boy is obsessed with growing vegetables.  He actually became intrigued with gardening by working side by side  with his  grandmother, Mo (my sister Mona)in her garden. 

At the age of five, he fully participates in every aspect  of growing vegetables.  He understands that cultivating the soil  prior to planting the seeds is a must, as he says,”let’s work the land first”, before planting the seeds.  He gets a kick out of watching the garden grow.  But what brings him the most joy is when it’s time for picking them. 

My sister taking the time to teach  her grandson all about growing vegetables makes my heart smile.  My father was a farmer, therefore we grew up working in the garden and eating fresh, home grown vegetables at every meal.  My father is no longer living, but this would make him very proud to see his great, great grandson’s love for growing vegetables. 

Diet is one of the most important factors for health in children. Not only can a healthy diet give kids the proper nutrition that they need for development, but it can also give them healthy habits that they can keep with them throughout their lives. 

Vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber.  Kids should be encouraged to eat a variety of vegetables and fruits. 

Teach your children at an early age to have a rainbow of colors on their plate.  Though, keep in mind, its best not to force your child to eat their vegetables. Being forceful only helps them develop a negative relationship with those foods. Instead, keep offering them up and mixing them with foods they like until they eventually start to eat more of them.
